Wajima-nuri Kinoko Brush

Lacquerware (Urushi) is a cornerstone of ancient Japanese craft culture, with a history stretching back 9,000 years to the early Jomon period. It began when the Jomon people, captivated by the unfathomable depth and cosmic luster of lacquer, began crafting "tools of the heart." Since then, Urushi has been a soulful vessel used to adorn sacred spaces and has deeply shaped the Japanese spirit. By the late 16th century, it reached Europe, leaving a significant impact on Western art and design.

To bring this heritage to you, I have partnered with Wajimaya Zenni, a master lacquerware house established in 1813. For over 200 years, they have upheld a tradition of excellence guided by their family motto: "A craftsman must possess a noble character."

I am honored to present this Kinoko Brush, featuring a handle meticulously finished using the durable "Hon-kataji" technique. Each piece is adorned with intricate Maki-e patterns, hand-painted with specially tailored gold powder from Kanazawa. I hope you feel the 9,000 years of history and the artisan’s soul in every stroke.
