Wajima-nuri Fan Brush

Lacquerware (Urushi) is an ancient Japanese craft with a history dating back 9,000 years to the early Jomon period. It began when the Jomon people, captivated by the unfathomable depth and luster of lacquer, began crafting "tools of the heart." Since then, lacquerware has been deeply intertwined with Japanese spirituality, used to adorn sacred spaces and soulful vessels. By the late 16th century, it reached Europe, significantly influencing Western art and craftsmanship.

To create this special Fan Brush, I collaborated with Wajimaya Zenni, a distinguished lacquerware house established in 1813. For over 200 years, they have nurtured a culture of excellence under their family motto, "A craftsman must possess a noble character."

I am proud to offer this piece, where the brush handle has been finished using the robust "Hon-kataji" technique. The intricate Maki-e patterns are hand-painted using specially prepared gold powder from Kanazawa, bringing a piece of Japanese history and soul to your collection.
