There's a forest near where I live.
I heard that many beetles are born there every year.
They flock to lights, so they can often be found in the morning.
I was surprised to learn that there are many beetles even in Tokyo. I wasn't able to find a single beetle where I was raised. My hometown in Hiroshima has a river and a forest – plenty of nature.
But I never found any beetles during the day.
So, every night when I was around 10 years old, I walked to several places where there were lights.
At 10 PM, very few people were walking. So when I did see someone, I got a little apprehensive.
Of course, it wasn't dangerous at all, but I rarely saw people around 10 PM, so at least I wanted to be prepared.
There was nothing to do at the lights, so I brought a baseball bat and practiced swinging.
It was a small town, and there were few people out at night.
When I think about it now, about the people I met on the road...
I was standing there with a baseball bat. I didn't think about it at that time. But I might have been the one who scared people.
I feel a little guilty now.
