Kutani ware is a type of traditional Japanese porcelain that is primarily produced in Ishikawa Prefecture. It is renowned for its vibrant colors and unique designs, with a particular emphasis on the use of five colors—green, yellow, red, purple, and blue—known as “Gosai” (five colors).
Kutani ware originated in the 17th century during the Edo period and initially developed with the support of the Kaga Domain (now the southern part of Ishikawa Prefecture). Although production ceased for a time, it was revived in the 19th century and has since been highly regarded both in Japan and internationally.
The range of Kutani ware products is extensive, including everything from tableware to decorative items, with many pieces featuring elaborate and colorful designs that are especially popular among collectors and art enthusiasts.
