============================
I did not have a good relationship with my father.
He easily lost his temper, and I was always scared. When I told my mother about this, she told me to look at other dads in the neighborhood.
Well, her theory was convincing. I was not a fan of those dads. The dad next door would drink at night and shout at something or someone, making me wonder if my own father wasn't so bad after all.
That said, I always respected one thing about my father. He acted quickly. He sometimes acted without thinking much. He was a quick guy.
I remember he rushed onto a Shinkansen (Bullet train) one Sunday when I was about 10 years old. I didn't pay attention to why. I was just happy to know he was not at home so that I could be relaxed LOL.
I guess it was when I was a student at university in Tokyo. I came home to Hiroshima and talked with my mother about it. I asked her why he was in such a hurry on that Sunday. It was a holiday.
She explained.
During the past week, he had been informed that he would be transferred to another division. The transfer was not good for his career.
He heard that his boss’s boss would take a Shinkansen (Bullet Train) from Hiroshima to Onomichi. Onomichi is a small city in Hiroshima prefecture. It took only 30 minutes by Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Onomichi.
He tried to meet him on the Shinkansen and convince the boss’s boss that the transfer was not good. He gambled his life on those 30 minutes.
Life is an exaggeration, but it was important.
He succeeded in stopping the transfer after those 30 minutes.
This type of move may not be fair to other people, but I respected his taking action rather than him complaining about it for the rest of his career.
I have many memories with my father. Most of them are not good.
But this one was well remembered. I recall it from time to time.
Thank you for reading,
Toshiya
